Sterling, Utah

Six Mile Canyon
We are in Sterling, Utah, a town of about 250, after arriving yesterday at our VRBO rented space, where we will stay for three weeks. We went to Walmart today and bought food, I just made tea, and Arlo and I have found places to walk, so we are settling in.

The trip here went well; we have never tried to travel with Arlo before, and he was very agitated most of the morning as we drove on Friday, but he was happy to get out and walk when we stopped, and by afternoon he had figured out that he could just lay down and rest. He did not get sick. He also did well in the motel Friday night. Taking Arlo with us seems like it can work.

Today we went to visit some nearby sites. Gunnison Reservoir involved some dirt roads and a one-lane bridge that caused Jackie to give up and turn around. Also, the reservoir was completely dry. Then we went to Six-Mile Canyon, which meant driving on a long dirt road out into Deliverance country until Jackie had enough and turned around again. Then we drove on civilized roads past Nine-Mile Reservoir, which was nearly dry also. There is a drought, and the weather forecast indicates we may not see any rain for the entire time we are here.

On those last two place names, I figure the locals ran out of creativity and Bible/Book of Mormon names, so they just got out the tape measure. However, I'm pretty sure Six Mile Canyon is more than six miles long, and Nine Mile Reservoir is nowhere near nine miles long even when it's full, so who knows what they were thinking.

I continue to get at least 10,000 steps in every day, but my posts about walking through Missouri are on hold until I recreate my spreadsheet that tells me how far I have walked. I don't have access to the original.

Tomorrow Arlo and I plan to visit our first national park, Capitol Reef, which is less than two hours away.
