Sunday, for the first time in a long time, I did not even try to get close to 10,000 steps, and finished the day with under 7,000. We went for a long drive, and it was too much of a stretch to get the steps in. It was a great drive though, and I have pictures.
I have tried not to walk too much around Sterling, because dogs bark at us wherever we go, and I don't want to annoy the community. This morning though, I walked all the way across this side of town - five blocks - and up one side street - another block - and back, about 3,000 steps. I counted 14 dogs that we set off, and we set them each off twice of course.
I am going to take that walk every morning from now on. Have to remember to take a walking stick with me for self-defense. To be fair though, none of the 14 dogs was loose.
The really good place to walk is out by the dry reservoir, but we need to do that during the day, because I am just a bit afraid of being shot if I go in the evening, even though I do not look much like a deer.
My walk across the US has me close to the town of Collins, Missouri, 240 miles across the state, with 180 miles to go.
Okay, Zion.
Zion National Park is not far from the Arizona border, and we drove through the south end of the park. Some roads in the park are only accessible by bus, but as we wanted to also visit Bryce Canyon in the same day, we did not have time for the bus.
We arrived at the park close to dawn - you can see the shadows in some of the pictures. The drive through is only six miles long, but there were plenty of turnouts and pictures to take. Two things you see a lot of in Zion: huge cliffs, and striped rocks that look like they were laid down in layers.
